Annealing is a process used to reduce the hardness of a metal and improve ductility, making it easier to work or form. This occurs by heating the metal to a sufficient point (recrystallization temperature) in order to modify the internal molecular crystallization structures.
Case-hardening is a process where heat treatment is used to increase the hardness on the outer-surface of a metal part, while leaving the core of the material unchanged with respect to hardness. This helps improve the durability of the surface.
Tempering is a process whereby metal (usually steel) is heated to a controlled temperature in order to release internal stresses. This is often important after a part is hardened to remove some brittleness. Tempering does not soften to the extent that annealing does, thereby ensuring that a level of structural strength is maintained.
Quenching is a process where heated metal is rapidly cooled, usually through a water or oil bath. This can help maintain material hardness and prevent deformation and phase transformations that can occur if the metal is left to cool slowly.
Carburizing is the process of adding carbon to steel or iron during a heat treatment in order to increase the hardness (typically of the surface).

Heat Treating Applications
Heat treating is used in a wide variety of industrial markets. Heat treated component parts are widely used in transportation markets like automotive, aerospace and locomotive. They are used in construction equipment, heavy machinery and a multitude of other applications. Machine tooling and manual tools are often heat treated to provide additional hardness, including cutting tools, milling and grinding tooling and construction tools like hammers, saws and pliers. Power transmission components like gear, sprockets, axles and bearings, all benefit from the hardened, more durable outer surface and more ductile inner core that heat treating provides.
The Advantages of Heat Treating
Heat treating processes are used to alter material properties of metals to gain a number of advantages while still maintaining some of the advantageous properties of the base metal. For example, heat treating can enhance durability through harder stronger outer surfaces. It can make steel stronger and tougher throughout the part. It can improve wear resistance. Heat treating can also be used to make parts more flexible to better handle internal stresses due to dynamic applications. Heat treating can also be used to improve the weldability of metals.
